The state house education committee heard testimony about a bill which revises certain provisions relating to the non-renewal of a teacher contract. House Bill 1145 allows the school board to terminate a teacher at any time for just cause including breach of contract- poor performance- insubordination- or violation of any policy of the school district.
Bryce Healy is the executive director and registered lobbyist for the South Dakota Education Association. He opposes the bill because he calls it a solution looking for a problem.
"Everyone wants talented, creative, inspiring teachers in South Dakota schools. Eliminating fair dismissal rights will have no affect on student achievement which we are all seeking to gain," Healy says
The proposed legislation was deferred to another day next week
