The State Senate passed a bill that criminalizes the failure of a childcare provider to report the death or disappearance of a child within a specified time.
State Senator Mike Vehle (Valley) of Mitchell says the infamous case of Casey Anthony sparked an outrage and movement for Senate Bill 43. He says the bill focuses on two areas.
"First the bill creates a class 1 misdemeanor for a parent or guardian who fails to notify law enforcement within forty-eight hours that a child less than 13 years-of-age has gone missing. The second thing it does is it creates a class 5 felony for a parent who fails to notify law enforcement within 6 hours of a death of a child," Vehle says.
Senator Vehle says situations where the death or disappearance of a child is unknown - the outcome for the caretaker will be different. Senate Bill 43 moves next to a House Committee.
