House Supports Teaching the Bible in Public Schools
Air Date:01/25/2012
The State House of Representatives passed a resolution supporting and encouraging the academic study of the Bible in South Dakota public schools. Representative Steve Hickey says the Bible is a cornerstone of western civilization, permeating culture, law, literature, art, and philosophy. He says the resolution asks school boards and boards of education to support an elective in the curriculum and not discourage the teaching of the Bible.
"I'm bringing the resolution for two reasons, I believe, in resolution form instead of bill form, local school boards should make the curriculum decisions not have mandates from above," Hickey says. "But also I think the disposition today in a resolution will take some of the fear of a first amendment violation away from a local school district that has a desire to teach the Bible, an elective course."
The House passed the resolution with a vote of 55 to 13.
