Governor Daugaard Reacts to Democrats Education Plan
Air Date:01/26/2012
State House and Senate democratic leaders presented their education plan Thursday. Governor Dennis Daugaard says he disagrees with several aspects of the proposal. He says the plan focuses on how much South Dakota should spend on education. He says the focus should instead be on how students are achieving, and how schools can improve achievement.
"It proceeds from the assumption that by spending more you have better achievement," Daugaard says. "But history has shown us that's not true. Over the last 40 years we've spent 2.3 times as much money on education, inflation adjusted. We're spending 2.3 times more per student, inflation adjusted, and achievement has not grown at all."
Daugaard says every education discussion should be centered around whether or not a policy will improve student achievement.
