Republican Leaders in the state legislature say they'll back a bill that provides rewards for the best rated teachers and gives a salary boost to those who teach math and science.
But Senate Democratic Leader Jason Frerichs (Frair-Ricks) says the proposed legislation will have negative consequences.
State Senator Phyllis Heineman of the appropriations and legislative procedure committee says House Bill 12-34 has adopted a common core training that focuses on rigorous math - reading - and science teaching to improve critical thinking amongst students.
"So in this next year that first 8 million dollar package is really focusing on investing in the teachers and really trying to help them bring those common core standards to life. We need more math and science teachers, we need more of our students with an early interest in math keeping it going through the middle schools, highs schools and then into post secondary," Heineman says.
Heineman says parents play a vital role in increasing student achievement but requirements for great teachers is critical.
Democratic State Senator Jason Freirich's says he applauds the effort of the proposed legislation but the governor's plan will not improve student performance.
