Resolution Aims to Change Term Limits

South Dakotans could have a chance in the next election to change legislative term limits written in the constitution. The House State Affairs Committee passed a resolution that changes term limits from eight years to twelve. Representative Jim Bolin is a prime sponsor of the resolution. He says term limits are good. But he says eight years is not long enough for a lawmaker to gain the depth of knowledge and experience necessary for effective involvement in the legislative process.
"The current situation for term limits in any one house of the legislature has done a disservice to the legislative branch of government because it has made it so that about the time you really are learning and becoming and effective member of the legislature it's time to vacate that particular house," Bolin says.
The resolution passed by a vote of nine to four, and next goes to the House floor. If the measure passes through the legislature, South Dakotans will vote on it in the next general election.
