Speeding Tickets Won't Cost Points
Air Date:01/30/2012
Speeding tickets won't tack on to the traffic violations point system. Monday, the state House of Representatives killed a bill adding speeding violations to the system. SDPB's Travis Berg reports.
Representative Steve Hickey sponsored House Bill 11-70. He says the measure is a comprehensive approach to slowing speeders down, and he says strict fines only hurt the occasional speeder.
"Those drivers need their privilege of driving revoked for a period of time, so they can wake up and think about their behavior," Representative Hickey says.
However, opponents say current enforcement does work. Representative Lance Russell says the courts even consider driver history.
"I haven't heard a lot anecdotal evidence as to why we need to do that in this particular circumstance. The prosecutors and the judges already have the tools they need to handle these types of circumstances," Representative Russell says.
The measure failed 39 to 30. For South Dakota Public Broadcasting, I'm Travis Berg.
