The issue of legislative term limits is one step closer to getting on the 2012 ballot. House Joint Resolution 1004 passed the full House by a vote of 43 to 26. The measure extends term limits for lawmakers to 12 consecutive years in one chamber. Republican Representative Jim Bolin of Canton sponsored the bill. He says he is still a proponent of term limits but current 8 year limit for lawmakers is too short.
“It does not allow for the members of the legislature here in South Dakota to gain the depth of knowledge and the experience that is necessary for effective and positive involvement in the legislative process,” says Bolin.
Opponents of the legislation say longer term limits give lawmakers too much power.
House Joint Resolution 1004 now goes to the Senate. If it passes the legislature the measure goes to the vote the people in the November ballot.
