House Allows Guns in Work Parking Lots

The state House of Representatives passed a bill allowing employees to bring firearms to work. Currently, businesses can impose policies prohibiting guns on their property. House Bill 11-32 repeals that. However, the worker has to lock it up and keep it out of sight in a vehicle. Representative Gene Abdullah says the bill benefits citizens who like to hunt after work. Other proponents say it upholds second amendment rights. Opponents argue that the bill infringes on the business owner's rights. Democrat Representative Bernie Hunhoff says you should respect the rights of the business.
"We're all for gun rights, we're all for freedoms. But you can't expand one group's rights freedoms by stomping on the rights of another group. And, you especially can't do that when that other group is the men and woman who run businesses in the main streets of South Dakota," Representative Hunhoff says.
The bill also states that an employer is not liable for damages, injuries, or death resulting from having a firearm in the parking lot. The measure goes to Senate committee.
