House Allows Schools to Charge for Drivers Education and Pre-school

The state House of Representatives is allowing schools to charge for driver education and pre-school. Last fall, the attorney general announced that schools were breaking the law by charging for these services. S-D-P-B's Travis Berg has the report.
House Bill 11-95 let's schools charge for drivers ed and early childhood services. However, some lawmakers are concerned with the term early childhood services. They say it can't be narrowly defined. Representative Charlie Hoffman says it could open a new avenue of services.
"And if we allow this, pretty soon we'll first graders, second graders, third graders, all having been dropped off at school at one or two and taught. And we're going to be responsible for this some day- this is how it goes. Pretty soon tax payers are going to be having baby care, birthing centers in schools, and who knows what," Representative Hoffman says.
Proponents say the bill allows schools to continue with what they're already doing. They say they trust schools to make the right decision. The bill moves to Senate committee. For South Dakota Public Broadcasting, I'm Travis Berg.
