Sen. Appropriations Adds Financial Accountability to Education Plan

Schools might have to show financial and academic accountability with a new education plan. The Senate Appropriations committee added financial accountability to Senate Bill 25 Thursday. Members say it shows how efficient schools are with funds. Senator Deb Peters says it helps pinpoint which schools are hurting. The amendment issues a task force to set efficiency rates for individual districts. Senator Phyllis Heinemann says it is important to discuss how schools are using their resources.
"I think last year was a sobering reminder that the dollars aren't always increasing. With the federal implications and the federal deficits, with the growing areas in some of our other state budgets, I think it's going to be incumbent upon us to really challenge all of us to say ‘every dollar we've got has to be effectively spend," Senator Heinemann says.
A section of the amendment rewards the top 20 percent of efficient districts. However, it was erased. Opponents of the measure say there isn't any data to prove what an efficient district is. The bill now goes to the Senate floor.
