Lawmakers Turn Down New State Flag
Air Date:02/06/2012
The House State Affairs Committee turned down a bill aimed at changing the state flag.
Those in favor of the measure argue that South Dakota's current flag does not represent the state's diverse population and does not make a good flag for future generations.
But opponents countered that there is no outcry across the state to change the current flag.
Republican Representative Brian Gosch argues that the current state flag honors the history of South Dakota.
"The current flag is very similar to our first state flag. The proposed flag with the original bill you know deviates from our state flag substantially. I'm just not sure it's a good idea to throw away history like that from what we're using now because somebody thinks they have a better idea," says Gosch.
The committee killed the bill by a vote of seven to four.
