Crossover Crunch Bearable.

Legislators in Pierre have one week to go before crossover day--that's the deadline for when each bill must be clear of its house of origin. This year lawmakers paused to pay tribute to the late Governor Bill Janklow--that left them with 33 days to complete their work rather than the normal 35 day short session. SDPB's Charles Michael Ray spoke with a legislative leader who says despite the crunch things are on track.
Republican Cory Brown is the Senate's Assistant Majority leader. Brown says the shorter session means the appropriations committees are holding some special afternoon meetings this week.
"We are going to add Wednesday afternoon on the senate side we're going to make some bills and I know the House is going to do that on Tuesday so we're just trying to give ourselves a little room before we hit next week," says Brown.
The Legislature does have the authority to move cross over day with a 2/3 majority vote but Brown says delaying crossover is not planned at this time. Brown says this session has seen slightly fewer bills which helps lawmakers meet their deadlines.
