Coyote Killing Bill Dies

A legislative committee turned down a bill to allow unlimited killing of coyotes and foxes in South Dakota. The bill lifted the varmint license requirement. Currently it costs five dollars for a license to shoot coyotes and other varmints. SDPB's Charles Michael Ray has this story.
Representative Betty Olson represents northwest South Dakota. Olson says ranchers in her district are fed up with predators taking livestock. She favors all efforts to remove coyotes and foxes.
"The coyotes are killing us, up where I live, and you've heard testimony from some of the other ranchers and we want anybody resident or non resident that happens to see a coyote in our area or anyplace else in our state to shoot the darn thing," says Olson.
But the Game Fish and Parks Department opposed the bill. The GF&P says the license requirement in South Dakota is the same as surrounding states and lifting it would give out of state residents an advantage hunting here that South Dakota residents don't get when they hunt outside the state.
