The legislature is considering a bill that prohibits people accused of certain felonies from entering a bar they work at or own.
The bill prohibits anyone charged with a drug related felony, a crime of violence or a crime involving a minor from entering a bar that they own or work at.
State Senator Tom Hansen of Huron says an incident in his home town spurred this bill. Hansen says a bar owner accused of sexually abusing minors was allowed to continue selling alcohol.
"He was found to have been selling or providing beer to young girls and then sexually taking advantage of them. He was arrested but posted cash bond and in a couple days the bar was once again opened for business. A few days later the police did a routine walk through and found him again serving alcohol to minors," Hansen said.
No opponents testified against the bill on the senate floor. The legislation received unanimous approval. It goes next to the State House.
