Save the Rural Postal Service
Air Date:02/08/2012
The State Legislature is sending a message to the United States Post Office. Both the State House and the Senate have passed a resolution urging the Postal service to keep rural post offices open.
Republican Betty Olson represents constituents in the small northwest South Dakota town of Riva.
"We are supposed to drive to Lemon to pick up our packages. Lemon is 74 miles from Riva and a lot of the patrons at Riva are up to 30 miles away from Riva. So multiply that and see what kind of cost savings that will be to rural America," Olson said
The measure passed the House unanimously after the State Senate passed the resolution with only one opposing vote. A Post Office official says the Postal Service has no reaction at this time.
