Legislation requiring lawmakers votes to be displayed online fails in committee
Air Date:02/10/2012
The House State Affairs committee discussed two bills that deal with putting lawmaker's votes online. House Bill 1140 requires all recorded votes be displayed on the Legislative Research Council’s website. House Bill 1141 requires the Legislative Research Council’s website to include a listing of votes cast by individual lawmakers. Republican Representative Stace Nelson of Fulton sponsored both bills. Nelson says they allow for more open government.
"We’re not up here for ourselves, we’re not up here for a party, we’re up here for our constituents from our individual districts and I truly believe they have the right to know how we vote on every issue," says Nelson.
Those who spoke against the bills say the legislature can change the website without having to put it in statute.
The House State Affairs committee deferred House Bills 1140 and 1141 to the 41st legislative day.
