Surrogacy Bill Passes
Air Date:02/13/2012
The House Judiciary Committee passed a bill to change the way surrogacy arrangements are regulated.
Those in favor of the bill like Republican State Representative Roger Hunt argue that women who carry a surrogate child need to have their rights protected.
Hunt says the bill would not outlaw surrogacy--rather it makes surrogacy contracts unenforceable by law.
"It means that people can go ahead and have children for other people but what it means is that mother when she gives birth to that child has the right to keep that child - what this bill is seeking to do is to protect the rights of women," says Hunt
Those opposed to the measure argue that it is unnecessary and ambiguous legislation that takes choice away from women who wish to be surrogates.
The bill passed by a vote of seven to five.
