Senate Bill 15 Passes House

The State House of Representatives passed a bill that revises some provisions relating to the involuntary commitment of some people with mental illness. Representative Susy Blake says there are three pieces to the measure. First, it expands the number of people within licensed professional providers who are allowed to do exams as part of the involuntary commitment. Second, it allows for people to be directly committed to outpatient treatment. And third, the bill allows for one board to hear petitions for both mental illness and substance abuse.
"All of these were done with a watchful eye and protection of the patient's rights, and making sure that they were provided for," Blake says.
Senate Bill 15 passed the House by a vote of 54 to ten. It now goes to the Governor's desk.
