Measure limiting co-pays on physical and occupational therapy passes Senate

Air Date:02/15/2012

A measure limiting co-payments on physical and occupational therapy services has passed the state Senate. Proponents of House Bill 1183 say some insurance companies charge higher co-pays for physical and occupational therapy than other medical services. Republican Senator Jean Hunhoff of Yankton says this bill is about patient choice.

“If I am prescribed or supposed to go see a therapist, whatever the type is, and I can’t because I can’t afford the co-pay so my other option is another provider because their co-pay is lower am I having my choice and the need that’s their that’s been prescribed to see that practitioner being afforded to our patients. That’s what health care is all about. That’s what the scream is that people have to have a choice. And all this is doing is making that choice possible,” says Hunhoff.

Republican Senator Ried Holien of Watertown spoke against the bill. He says this intrudes on the rights of business owners and should be left to the free market.
The Senate passed the bill by vote of 20 to 12. It now goes to the Governor
