The House Local Government Committee passed a bill that updates and clarifies language that informs the initiative and referendum process in South Dakota.
State Representative David Sigdestad (Siggs-Ted) of Pierpont is a proponent of Senate Bill 70(seventy). He says the current law is confusing and spread among several statutes.
"Senate Bill 70 also updates and clarifies the formation and campaign finance filings of the ballot question committees. Building on the success of the Secretary of State's new online campaign finance system, Senate Bill 70 does what I think is a most important part of the bill. It allows for the electronic filings of campaign finance statements," Sigdestad said.
Secretary of State Jason Gant says the legislation does not add major changes on how referred laws get on the ballot. He says the basic process will remain the same.
The bill passed with a unanimous vote and now heads to the house floor.
