House Committee Kills Ed Funding Change

The House Appropriations Committee killed a measure to revise calculation of the small school adjustment in state aid to education today (Wednesday). Senate Bill 85 reduces per-pupil costs for students who open-enrolled from larger schools to smaller districts. Proponents testify the move evens out state spending between districts. One opponent, Democratic Representative H-Paul Dennert of Columbia, urged defeat of the measure.
Dennert says, "All I remember is, when the new formula took place, the big comment from all schools was ‘leave other revenue alone.' Now this isn't other revenue, I understand that-but once we start down this road, I think it's gonna bring to light looking at other revenue; and if you think you've got a fight here, you'll have a bigger fight when that day comes."
An amendment to not penalize what are termed as sparse schools-as well as small school to small school open enrollment transfers and districts bordering other states, was defeated. The bill was deferred to the 41st Day.
