Small-School Administrators Against Funding Change Plan

Several small school administrators spoke against Senate Bill 85 this morning (Wednesday) at the State Capitol. The measure changes the state's education funding formula, and eliminates extra money for small districts who have students open-enroll from larger districts. Wolsey-Wessington administrator James Cutshaw says the bill is a bad idea, and would jeopardize his school's success.
Cutshaw says, "In the last four years, we've gone from a little over 200 students to 310 students in our district. We've gone from 25 or so open enrolled students to 116 open enrolled students. We don't recruit-we don't put ads in the paper, but we bring these kids in. Why? We teach, and we teach well, and we got a great school district."
Cutshaw says with very few exceptions, he is forced to accept students who open-enroll into the Wolsey-Wessington district, and they can't afford to lose funds. The bill was deferred to the 41st Day.
