Food tax refund bill advances through legislature

Lawmakers have passed House Bill 1206 which gets rid of the Food Tax Refund Program. The measure takes the 800,000 dollars left in the program and gives it to organizations that help low-income families with food assistance. Organizations will have to apply for the funds through the Department of Social Services. Senator Mike Vehle of Mitchell voted against the bill. He says eliminating the Food Tax Refund Program could lead to repealing the tax on food completely.
“We’ve got a broad-based sales tax and we need to protect. Now if the program for the refund isn’t working then lets fix the refund,” says Vehle.
Proponents of the legislation say the Food Tax Refund Program is an inefficient use of tax payer dollars.
House Bill 1206 passed the Senate and now goes to a conference committee.
