School Boards: HB 1234 "Too Much, Too Quick"

Opponents of the governor’s education bill say lawmakers are trying to reform too much of the system – and they’re not allowing enough time to establish effective plans. State Senators took hours of testimony on House Bill 1234.
Wade Pogany of the Associated School Boards spoke in cautious favor of HB 12-34 when a house committee addressed the bill, but he switched sides Thursday. The Senate Education committee amended considerable portions of the legislation, but Pogany says those changes aren’t enough to fix the bill.
"What I’ve heard from school boards is that we need to continue the debate, we need to continue the conversation, but not in the frame that it is now," Pogany says. "What they told me was, they said Wade, this is too much, too quick and too much risk."
Pogany points out that lawmakers have almost entirely revamped House Bill 1234 twice already, and he says the bill contains uncertainty for schools. Lawmakers supporting the bill say they must pass legislation to jumpstart change in education, and the latest version of the bill accomplishes their goal.
A newly amended HB 12-34 is on its way to the full Senate.
