SDPB to Examine South Dakota's

Connection to the Kansas City Massacre

SDPB Radio featured the fascinating life of South Dakotan Verne Miller in a new one-hour documentary, Wayward Soldier: Verne Miller and the Kansas City Massacre.

The SDPB Radio documentary premiered on Tuesday, June 17, at Noon CT/ 11 a.m. MT, marking the 70th anniversary of the Kansas City Massacre.

A resident of the Huron area, Miller didn't always have a shady past. He was regarded as a war hero and even became the Beadle County Sheriff. But somewhere, his good intentions went south as he became a bank robber, a hit man and a bootlegger.

In addition to being heard on SDPB Radio, Wayward Soldier: Verne Miller and the Kansas City Massacre will be distributed throughout the country to other public radio stations.

Ken Mills, Owner and Director of KMA, an agency specializing in public radio programs, had these comments about the radio documentary: "South Dakota Public Broadcasting is known nationwide as one of the best public radio networks. I'm pleased to bring Wayward Soldier: Verne Miller and the Kansas City Massacre to NPR stations. SDPB Radio News Director Brian Bull and his team have assembled a terrific radio program in the tradition of NPR's in-depth reporting."
